New To Streaming: What to watch on Netflix NZ, Neon and more this week

We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

Alice and Steve (Disney+, June 8)

In the uproarious “wrong-com” series Nicola Walker (The Split) and New Zealand’s own Jemaine Clement play best friends Alice and Steve, whose time-tested relationship is turned on its head when Steve starts dating the much-younger Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith) – who also happens to be Alice’s daughter. The ensuing fallout between the two fuels a “cycle of escalation so pointless and petty it could have powered an entire season of Beef”. Let the games begin.

Celebrity Escape (ThreeNow, June 9)

Rove McManus returns to New Zealand screens as the mischievous host of Celebrity Escape, a new high-stakes, high-pressure escape room TV show. Local comedians Josh Thomson, Abby Howells, Chris Parker and Hayley Sproull join Australia’s Celia Pacquola, Luke McGregor and Frank Woodley to tackle a series of themed escape rooms where puzzles, panic and peer voting decide who survives. These comedians are no Sherlock Holmes, but you can be sure that they’ll deliver a barrel of laughs.

Number One Fan (ThreeNow, June 9)

In this “silly but oh-so-watchable” thriller, Jill Halfpenny plays Lucy Logan, a beloved British daytime TV show presenter. When Logan is mugged in a supermarket car park and rescued by adoring superfan Donna (Sally Lindsay), her life begins to unravel as her obsessive saviour quietly infiltrates the star’s career, family and friendships. If you enjoy soaps with a side of suspense, Number One Fan is “four hours of guaranteed, preposterous fun.”

Devs (Neon, June 8)

Created, written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation), this American sci-fi thriller series stars Sonoya Mizuno as Lily Chan, a software engineer working at a fictitious Silicon Valley tech giant led by Forest (Nick Offerman). Chan soon finds herself investigating Forest, after her partner is promoted to a secretive internal division and then vanishes under suspicious circumstances. Labelled as a “daring and new deconstruction of one of the basic tenets of human existence,” the mind-bending Devs will stick with you “whether you want it to or not”.

Over Your Dead Body (Prime Video, June 10)

An English-language remake of the Norwegian film The Trip, the action comedy thriller film Over Your Dead Body is led by Jason Segel and Samara Weaving as Dan and Lisa, a miserable couple. The two retreat to a remote cabin in the hopes of repairing their flagging relationship, but unbeknownst to either of them, they both arrive at their getaway with a secret plan to kill the other. Dubbed as one of the “funniest films of the year” that also “happens to be one of the bloodiest”, Over Your Dead Body is a must-see if you like your humour pitch black.

Pick of the Flicks: Exit 8 (AroVision, June 10)

Based on the viral Japanese video game of the same name, Genki Kawamura’s eerie Exit 8 follows an unnamed man (Kazunari Ninomiya) who is trapped in an endlessly looping subway passageway. To reach Exit 8 and escape the sterile, subterranean purgatory, the commuter must detect the anomalies in each passageway or he’ll be returned to Exit 0, his progress reset. If you’ve ever wandered the liminal labyrinth that is Queen Street’s Sky World, this “elegant, chilly dream of despair” is one to watch.
