E-scooter rider dies after being struck by train in Christchurch

An e-scooter rider has died after being hit by a freight train in Christchurch early this morning.
Police were notified of the crash at the Lincoln Road level crossing in the suburb of Addington at around 3.30am. The person died at the scene.
Some road closures were in place while the serious crash unit examined the scene, with motorists asked to avoid the area.
Kiwirail chief operations officer Duncan Roy called it a "distressing situation" and confirmed the TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific scenic trains had been cancelled for the day.
"Our thoughts are with all those involved, their families and loved ones," he said
"Our locomotive engineer (train driver) was uninjured but has been relieved as per standard procedure and is being supported by KiwiRail."
Police were yet to identify the victim.
