Teens arrested in connection with 35 alleged car thefts in Tūrangi

Two teenagers have been arrested after allegedly stealing 35 vehicle thefts across Tūrangi, all of which occurred in recent months.
Police said it was made aware of around 35 vehicle thefts in the small town south of Taupō, calling it a "huge" and "extraordinary" number.
Detective Sergeant Craig Dalton said two searches connected to the offending were carried out on Tuesday.
Two teens, aged 15 and 13, who are "known Mongrel Mob associates" were arrested.
Officers also seized a gun, air rifles, and cannabis growing equipment.
The 15-year-old is due to reappear in Taupō Youth Court on 18 June facing 11 charges related to vehicle thefts.
The 13-year-old has been referred to Youth Aid.
Two older men were also arrested and will face separate charges.
"Two further men – one being a patched Mongrel Mob member and the other an associate – were arrested in relation to other offending incidental to the search warrants.”
One 38-year-old man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
The other, a 40-year-old, was charged with contravening a protection order. He was due to reappear in Taupō District Court on August 3.
“We know vehicle theft is an incredibly frustrating crime for our community, so I am pleased we are able to hold these alleged offenders to account. I hope these arrests reassure the community that Police take this type of offending seriously."
"Police continue to make inquiries and cannot rule out further arrests or charges."
