An 83-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of careless driving after a woman was killed when a car crashed into a café on Auckland's North Shore earlier this year.

Sarah Clark, 44, died in hospital on March 11 after a vehicle unexpectedly mounted the kerb and hit her while she was enjoying a morning hot chocolate.

Daughter Hannah and puppy Cosmo were also injured in the incident outside William Souter Espresso in the suburb of Forrest Hill.

The 83-year-old driver has now been summonsed to appear in court later this month.

At the time of the accident, a worker nearby described hearing a loud bang, and said the scene was "heartbreaking".

They said a person from a neighbouring vet clinic rushed out to help – comforting the badly injured woman and trying to keep her conscious.

Her husband Cameron remembered her as "beautiful, wise, caring, smart, diligent, and full of faith". He said he got to experience “a richer definition of love” over their 18 years of marriage.

Her sister Lisa said Sarah's determination, sense of adventure, and love for her kids were a source of inspiration for her.

Pastor Grant Harris of the Windsor Park Baptist Church, where Clark worked, told 1News in March she was "someone we're really going to miss".

Detective Sergeant Wayne Gear said an 83-year woman has been summonsed to court on two charges following an investigation.

"She will face a charge of careless operation of a vehicle causing death, and careless operation of a vehicle causing injury."

The woman is expected to appear in the North Shore District Court on June 29.
