Two people are dead following two seperate crashes in Northland last night.

Three people have been injured in a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 near Hunterville this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the crash near the intersection of Vinegar Hill Rd at around 1.10pm on Sunday.

One person died at the scene, while three others were treated for moderate injuries, police said.

SH1 was closed while emergency services worked at the scene but had since reopened.

"We wish to thank motorists for their patience while the road was closed."

St John responded with two ambulances, a rapid response unit, a first response unit, a manager, and a helicopter.

"Our crews assessed and treated one patient in a moderate condition and one patient in a minor condition at the scene. A third patient in a moderate condition was transported to Palmerston North Hospital."

Fire and Emergency NZ responded with crews from Hunterville, Mangaweka and Marton.
