Two killed, three injured in Northland crash

A serious crash has closed a section of Kaitaia-Awaroa Rd at the intersection with Tangonge Rd.

Two people have been killed and three others injured, one critically, after a two-vehicle crash in Northland's Ahipara this morning.

Police were called to the two-vehicle crash on Kaitaia-Awaroa Rd, approximately 30km southwest of Kaitāia, at around 9.40am.

"Two people died at the scene, a third person was critically injured," a police spokesperson said.

St John said it sent one manager, two ambulances, and one helicopter.

"Our crews assessed and treated three patients; one in a critical condition and one in a moderate condition were transported to Northland Base hospital, one patient in a minor condition was treated at the scene."

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) said it sent sent two crews from Kaitaia, and one from Ahipara to the scene.

"We are on scene extricating one patient and assisting police," a FENZ spokesperson said.

The road was likely to remain closed for several hours while a scene examination was carried out. Detours were in place and motorists were advised to expect delays.

The double fatal crash is the first of the Matariki holiday toll period, which runs from 4pm on Thursday until 6am on Monday.
