Police and Oranga Tamariki staff are dealing with an incident occurring at Te Puna Wai o Tuhinapo youth justice facility near Christchurch.

Late this morning, five young people left their unit and accessed a roof area in the facility.

A staff member suffered minor injuries during this incident and is being cared for at Christchurch Hospital.

Police and Fire and Emergency NZ are on-site and helping staff resolve the incident, an Oranga Tamariki spokesperson told the Herald.

Police confirmed officers are assisting staff at the Rolleston facility.

This is the second incident at the site in a matter of months.

In February, six police vehicles and a fire truck were called to the building after young people could be heard yelling out to each other from inside.

At least two young people were seen pacing on the facility’s roof.
