One person has died following a late-night crash near the border of Auckland and Waikato, with a stretch of State Highway 2 remaining closed this morning.

Police say emergency services were called to the scene involving two vehicles in Mangatāwhiri at around 11.10pm.

“Upon arrival, one person was sadly located deceased,” police said.

“Enquiries into the crash remain ongoing.”

A section of SH2, between Koheroa Rd and the SH1 intersection, remains closed after the Serious Crash Unit completed a scene examination.

Koheroa Rd has reopened after being closed earlier, providing a detour route between SH1 and SH2.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) advised northbound motorists to exit SH2 at Koheroa Rd, following the road through to Mercer and on to SH1.

Southbound motorists are advised to travel the same route in reverse.

“Avoid the area or delay your journey if possible,” NZTA said.
