A person has been rushed to hospital with critical injuries after a serious assault in Auckland City this evening.

Emergency services were called to Wellesley St East, near Rutland St, about 6.45pm.

Acting Inspector Warwick Stainton said police found a person with critical injuries.

They were taken to hospital while another person was taken into custody.

Cordons remained on Wellesley St late into the evening as police worked to establish what happened.

Several Auckland Transport bus services were diverted and stops near AUT temporarily closed due to the police response.

A Herald photographer at the scene said detectives and a specialist forensic photographer were examining an area of Wellesley St East near Princes St, where two forensic tents had been erected.

A black Tesla remained in the middle of Wellesley St with its doors open.

A Hato Hone St John response vehicle was parked near the scene, where a shoe was lying on the ground.
