Colleagues and fellow truckers are grieving the loss of James “Jimmy” Williams after a fatal crash.

Williams died following a serious crash in North Canterbury. Police were called to the incident involving two trucks on State Highway 1 in the Hurunui district, about 8.33am on Monday.

When crews arrived, one truck was well ablaze with a person trapped inside, Fire and Emergency NZ said.

Williams, who worked as a driver for Vowles Transport, was removed from the vehicle while crews worked to extinguish the fire.

Photos from the scene, provided to the Herald, show a large fireball engulfing at least one of the vehicles. Black smoke was seen billowing from the scene.

“The stories and memories have been flowing amongst us all as we remember the incredible man he was and the impact he had on everyone lucky enough to know him.
