A man just days away from celebrating his 35th birthday is being remembered as a loving father, son, brother and friend after a fatal crash.

Family tributes online have named William Zane Hori Te Rangi as the victim of a van crash near Gisborne.

“He will be remembered for his kind heart, infectious humour, generous spirit and the unconditional love he shared so freely,” his whānau said.

His family said his sudden passing had left an immeasurable void and he would be profoundly missed by whānau, friends and all whose lives he touched.

In a social media post, a friend thanked Te Rangi for his support, humour and love.

“Thank you for always having my back multiple times, your huge grin and humour and all your love you had,” they wrote.

In another social media post, a friend said Te Rangi’s death was heartbreaking.

“So sad nephew, you are a star in the heavens,” they wrote.

The family asked for support as they navigated their loss and thanked those who had offered prayers and aroha.

Tangihanga details would be shared once arrangements had been confirmed.

A single-vehicle crash happened on Wharekopae Rd in Pātūtahi at about 5.20pm.

One person died and 11 others were injured, five of them seriously. It is understood the occupants of the van were forestry workers.

Hato Hone St John said nine vehicles and three helicopters had attended the incident.
