Police cars rammed by vehicle that caught fire after being spiked
Two people have been arrested after two police cars were rammed by a vehicle that had caught fire when its wheels were spiked in Havelock North.
Acting Senior Sergeant Matthew Wilkin said other road users were put in danger when the speeding driver fled through Hastings and Flaxmere this evening.
Wilkin said just before 6.15pm, officers spotted a vehicle on Clive Street that had been involved in another police chase yesterday.
The driver took off again, driving down rural roads and into the Havelock North township.
“Police successfully spiked the tyres of the car, but the driver kept going despite the wheels sparking and car smoking and on fire, endangering other members of the public who were on the road,” said Wilkin.
After following the car at a distance, it was blocked in on Flaxmere Avenue.
“In a desperate bid to flee the scene, the offender rammed two police patrol cars.
“Thankfully, no one was injured, but the vehicles have sustained damage,” said Wilkin.
A 29-year-old man and 28-year-old woman - who both had existing warrants to arrest - were taken into custody without incident and will face further charges.
The area remains cordoned off.
