Introducing a new homepage for Stuff's new era
Friday, 26 June 2020
Welcome to Stuff's new homepage. Come on in, we'll show you around.
This is an inclusive whare. Everyone's welcome, and we hope you'll find something to your taste.
Twenty years since Stuff debuted in a cybercafe in Auckland, it's a momentous time for us. Last month our chief executive, Sinead Boucher, bought the company from the Australian media giant Nine, taking us into New Zealand ownership.
Our new homepage channels the renewed energy of Stuff's new era.
Trust and quality: The top of the homepage showcases the best of our world-class original journalism, chosen by our editors. It accentuates our local focus – Stuff employs New Zealand's largest cohort of reporters, photographers and video journalists.
Easy navigation: The 'hamburger menu' – the three bars in the top-left corner – give you quick access to Stuff's sections.
Familiar favourites: The daily quiz will continue to be easily accessible in our editors' picks module, and you can find puzzles in the daily fix.
Reflecting the zeitgeist: Topics displayed on the homepage will reflect what's on New Zealanders' minds – such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fresh voices: Our new perspectives module offers a varied diet of opinion and analysis from across Stuff's stable – and gives new prominence to our cartoonists, including the multi-award-winning Sharon Murdoch.
Te Ao Māori: Kei te takahi mātou i te ara hōu, ki te tuhituhi pūrongo, ki te whakapaoho mō te ataahua me te kanorau o te whenua. We are treading a new path, to write stories and broadcast about the beauty and diversity of the land. Our new pou tiaki section – named for a carved post used to stand guard and protect – focuses on te Ao Māori, the Māori world.
Press play: Our fast-growing video site, PlayStuff, cues up clips from sources as diverse as Vice, SkySportNext, The Guardian, Bravo, and NZ On Screen.
Backing biz: prosper provides insight, advice and packages for the half a million small businesses in New Zealand.
Sustainable future: Stuff's commitment to clear-eyed coverage of the climate crisis continues with the forever project.
DIY right here: homed is our one-stop shop for property news, real estate insight, and home decoration or renovation inspiration.
Deep dives: The spotlight module ensures stories with a longer shelf life – such as investigations or special projects from our national correspondents team – don't fade too quickly from our busy homepage.
Cream of the crop: Stuff offers a platform to top-tier content from domestic and international partners, including Bravo, Newsroom, 1 News and Māori Television.
Mastheads: Our website is 20 years old (or young), but that's backed by more than 150 years of newspaper history.
This big redesign marks our first truly 'responsive' homepage – it reacts to the size of your browser. Whether you're scrolling headlines on your smartphone on the bus, watching videos on the office broadband (headphones on please!), or relaxing with a tablet in the lounge in the evening, you'll enjoy the same experience. (For the record: the new look is visible on our desktop and mobile web homepages, but our iOS and Android apps are unchanged.)
The technology powering the page allows us to offer faster load times, and crisper images. The font choices – based around Roboto – express the authority Stuff has come to hold in 2020. But the same bold colours we've carried since the start of the millennium say this is still Stuff at full spectrum – from fearless investigation and fast-breaking news to the quirky, the fun and the unexpected.
