A man has died after a van and a light truck crashed in Pukekohe on Tuesday morning.

The accident, which happened at 9.45am, took place on Cape Hill Rd.

The driver of the van was trapped and had to be cut out of the vehicle - he died shortly on route to Middlemore Hospital.

The  man driving the light truck received minor injuries.

Pukekohe Police Sergeant Wayne Paxton said the crash was still being investigated. He said  'weather may have played a factor' in its cause.

Paxton said he attended seven minor crashes on Tuesday, all of which he believed speed and weather were to blame.

'People need to drive to the conditions. We bang on about it all the time and we sound like a broken record … we just can't enforce it enough,' said Paxton.

'You need to slow down.'

Police closed Cape Hill Rd from 10am to 1pm.

The Counties Manukau Police  Serious Crash Unit is investigating the accident.
