A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in the Auckland suburb of Northcross on Thursday morning. 

Emergency services were called to the crash, on Oteha Valley Rd near Mayfair Drive, on the city's North Shore, around 7.30am.

The person died at the scene. 

A nearly kilometre long diversion has been put in place on Oteha Valley Rd, from the East Coast Rd traffic lights to the roundabout by Rising Pde. 

Emergency services were called to the incident at 7.30am but the pedestrian was dead at the scene.

Police at the scene were unable to make a comment at this time.

The Serious Crash Unit were investigating, police said. 

Heavy traffic congestion is building in all directions from the road closure, particularly both directions on East Coast Rd.

Police were advising people to avoid the area.
