Wild weather calls Fire and Emergency to 40 jobs in one night in South Auckland

Fire and Emergency were kept busy on Friday night after wild thunderstorms and rain lashed parts of South Auckland. 

Metservice said on Friday a severe thunderstorm watch was in place for much of the North Island.

Manurewa resident Faye Wong captured dramatic of the electric storm from the Weymouth boat ramp where lightning illuminated the night sky. 

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said that they were called to about 40 jobs on Friday night, which ranged from flooding calls to alarm activations caused by lightning.

All of the flooding was in Manurewa and Papakura, the spokesman said. 

The flurry of calls started at about 9.30pm, he said. 

More rain is on the cards for Auckland tomorrow, with possibly heavy and thundery showers expected. These should ease in the evening, according to Metservice. 

Papakura and Manurewa residents took to social media on Friday night to share updates on flooding and power outages. 

'Power been off twice and sounds like someone is trying to rip our roof off!!' somebody wrote.
