Rarely-seen elephant seal in Auckland should not be approached, DOC warns

A rarely-seen elephant seal has been spotted on Auckland beaches, but it could be dangerous if approached, a Department of Conservation ranger warns.
The large adult female has been popping up on several beaches since Sunday morning. It is thought to weigh just under a tonne.
DOC senior biodiversity ranger Thelma Wilson said elephant seals were very rare visitors to Auckland beaches and it was important to keep a safe distance.
'Elephant seals are big and heavy, but they can move surprisingly quickly,' Wilson said.

'Beach goers should be alert, keep an eye out and give seals a wide berth. Always keep dogs on a leash, under control and at least 20 metres away from seals.
'Never forget that elephant seals are wild animals and will defend themselves if they feel threatened. Remember to give the elephant seal some space so that it has a pleasant holiday.'
It's unusual, although not unheard of, to see elephant seals in Auckland.
While they normally reside in the sub-Antarctic islands, elephant seals do occasionally visit mainland coastlines, usually in the South Island.
Wilson said people should avoid getting closer than 20 metres to the seal or getting between the animal and the sea.
Small children should also be kept at a safe distance.
