Auckland Harbour Bridge to light up in time with Sky Tower fireworks on New Year's Eve

Friday, 28 December 2018

Auckland brings in the New Year by lighting up the Sky Tower.

Two Auckland landmarks will come to life on New Year's Eve for a midnight 'spectacular' of light and sound.

The Harbour Bridge will put on a Vector Lights display from 9pm, before a countdown to midnight when the lights will pulse in time with the Sky Tower.

'At the stroke of midnight, Vector Lights will explode into a five-minute spectacular, designed to complement Sky City's five-minute fireworks display from the Sky Tower,' Auckland Council said.

Vector Lights is part of a wider 10-year smart energy partnership between Vector and Auckland Council.

The light show would continue until 1am.

Revellers could listen to an audio stream synced to the light show at vector.co.nz/lights

There would also be a live stream hosted on that website, as well as on the Vector Facebook page.

Auckland Council said the best views of the bridge from the city would be from Bastion Point, the Auckland waterfront, Herne Bay's Sentinel Beach, or Mount Eden.

On the North Shore, the best views would be from Little Shoal Bay in Northcote, Bayswater Marina, or Mount Victoria or Queens Parade in Devonport.

West Aucklanders would be able to view the display from Te Atatū Peninsula.

The bridge was fitted with $10 million worth of lights, including 90,000 LED pixels and 100 spotlights, in December 2017.

It has since been illuminated to celebrate days of significance, such as Auckland Anniversary Day, Anzac Day and Matariki.
