Power still out in parts of Auckland as MetService issues new wind warning after rain and gales

Some homes in Auckland are still without power after an night of heavy rain and strong winds. 

Overnight, people were warned about surface flooding, slips, and dangerous driving conditions as gales and heavy rain hit Auckland and other parts of the country.

There were 'pockets' of power cuts across Auckland and on Monday morning, a Vector spokesman said there were still a small number of storm-related power cuts impacting homes in the west, north and east of the city.

MetService has issued a new weather warning for Monday, with an alert for strong winds in the evening.

For many homes that had no power on Sunday night, restoration work was largely complete, the Vector spokesman said.

'In some cases, where conditions made work unsafe, our crews will be returning with the light to complete jobs,' he said.  

'We're continuing to work through all outstanding jobs, and our focus remains on restoring power as quickly as possible while ensuring the safety of our crews and the public.'

MetService's latest weather warning said strong winds were expected for Manukau Harbour, Waitematā Harbour, the Hauraki Gulf, and places from Bream Head to Cape Colville in Northland. 

The Hauraki Gulf and parts of Northland could experience 'southwest 30 knots gusting 40 knots, easing to 25 knots gusting 35 knots this afternoon', it said.

Manukau Harbour and Waitematā Harbour could experience 'southwest 25 knots gusting 35 knots', MetService said.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said it had been called to 30 weather-related incidents across the country's northern region.

Ten of those were in Auckland, he said.

'It was mostly trees down and lines sparking,' the spokesman said.

'There were no calls to property damage or flooding.'
