A major road in south Auckland has reopened, four hours after a pedestrian died after being hit by a truck.

The incident happened on Great South Rd in Manurewa around 6.30am on Tuesday, a police spokeswoman said.

Great South Rd between Mahia Rd and Myers Rd was closed while police investigated.

Lanes in both directions on Great South Rd were blocked by the crash, just north of Mahia Rd, but had reopened about 10.25am, Auckland Transport said.

Diversions had been in place and drivers had been asked to avoid the area, causing delays on Great South Rd near the Takanini interchange.

People were unable to access their work places between the Mahia Rd and Myers Rd cordons, turning parts of a nearby petrol station into a makeshift car park.

The group of about 30 workers and several students were milling around the petrol station for hours, unable to get to work and school due to the police cordons.

The footpath is dug up on one side of the road near where the pedestrian was hit, due to the construction of six houses nearby.

A St John spokeswoman said two ambulances had responded to the scene.

The Serious Crash unit attended.
