State Highway 1 closed after fatal crash south of Whangarei

Emergency services are attending a fatal crash that has closed State Highway 1 in Oakleigh, south of Whangarei.

One person died in the two-vehicle crash, which happened around 5.50pm on Wednesday near the intersection of SH1 and Springfield Road in Oakleigh.

Another person received moderate injuries.

A police spokesperson said the road was closed and diversions were in place.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised the spokesperson said.

NZTA said SH1 had been closed following the crash and commuters should allow an extra 25 minutes for the detour.

At 6.45pm it said it expected the stretch of road to remain closed for three hours.
