Timelapse captures blaze coming from SkyCity Convention Centre.

A timelapse video shows the speed of fire at Auckland's SkyCity Convention Centre.

Council employee Byron Birss filmed over the course of one hour on Tuesday, from floor 14 of the Auckland Council building.

Timelapse captures progression of the fire from the roof of Auckland's SkyCity Convention City. Assistant area commander Dave Woon said the fire is extremely challenging and firefighters are not on top of it.

The fire, which fire crews called extremely challenging, broke out early on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services put up cordons around the building site as choking acrid smoke continued to pour from the roof.
