A couple has welcomed their baby into the world while travelling to Auckland via the Waiheke Island ferry.
Passengers on the 7am ferry watched on in surprise – some clapping – as the mother was escorted off the ferry, followed by the proud dad, who carried his newborn.
A St John spokeswoman said the mother and baby were taken to Auckland City Hospital and both were doing fine.
Fullers360 fleet operations officer Megan Watson said the baby was born on the 7am ferry with assistance from members of the crew and the woman's midwife.
'We would like to congratulate the mother on her new arrival and will be reaching out to extend our congratulations to her and their family.'
Watson said she was 'very proud' of how crew members supported the woman and her family, adding that staff were trained to assist in these situations.
'It will be a sailing to remember for our crew.'
