Two people have been taken to hospital after a building fire in central Auckland.

Police said one of the people was a woman who had a serious leg injury as a result of falling from the two-storey building.

Firefighters from across Auckland were called to the 'well-involved' building fire on New North Rd, Eden Terrace, at 4.36am on Friday.

'All persons are accounted for,' a Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) spokesman said.

Eleven fire trucks were at the scene at the height of the fire, which included crews from Balmoral, Avondale, Grey Lynn, Mt Roskill, Onehunga, Parnell, Auckland, Te Atatū and Remuera.

Just before 1pm crews had left, leaving the incident with Auckland Council and insurance assessors.

A section of New North Rd, between Mt Eden Rd and Charlotte St, was closed for about 7 hours. One lane in each direction had reopened about 1.30pm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Armstrong said police were working with FENZ to determine the cause of the 'significant building fire'.

Police were ensuring the injured woman was being supported in hospital.

A St John spokeswoman said it sent three ambulance crews and a two rapid response units to the fire.

Two people were treated, one in a serious condition and one in a moderate condition, and transported to Auckland City Hospital.
