Bus driver attacked after asking passengers without masks to use back exit

An Auckland bus driver has been attacked after asking passengers without masks to exit through the rear bus door, a union says.
The driver sought medical assistance after being punched in the face by two women, Tramways Union president Gary Froggatt said.
“There were two passengers who did not have masks. [The driver] asked them if they would use the rear door because she’s concerned about her health.
“They refused, came up to her, grabbed her hair and punched her in the face … She had a cut lip, blood on her face,” Froggatt said.

Police received a report of the assault on Queen St about 7.45pm on Wednesday.
The driver sustained minor injuries, police said.
Froggatt said altercations with passengers over mask-wearing were not uncommon.
“I’m not sure when it's going to end. Bus drivers expect to be safe at work,” he said.
NZ Bus confirmed assaults against drivers were a concern across the industry.
“NZ Bus condemns any assault on our staff. The matter is currently being investigated internally, and we are also assisting police with their inquiries,” a spokesperson said.
However, Auckland Transport said attacks on drivers were an “incredibly rare occurrence”.
“Our drivers work really hard to keep Auckland moving and they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity by passengers,” an Auckland Transport spokesperson said.
Police said the victim had chosen not to file a report at this stage.
“However, police have provided appropriate support and information should they wish to do so and will be following up.”
