Dramatic rescue of fisherman plucked from the water at Piha

A fisherman who was swept out to sea at Auckland's Piha beach is being treated by paramedics.  

The man, believed to be in his 60s, was fishing with another man at Nun Rock when he was washed away at about 7.50am on Saturday.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter winched the man to safety off the shore of Piha on Saturday.

He was winched to safety by the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter and was taken to the shore at about 10am.

He was still being treated by a paramedic at 11am and his condition was not believed to be life threatening, a police spokeswoman said.

A Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman said the fisherman was likely to be driven to hospital by ambulance.

Surf lifesavers at Piha had helped with the rescue by using an inflatable rescue boat to reach the man.

He was wearing a life jacket.
