More than 1700 people have applied for just 100 jobs at the soon-to-be-opening Kmart store in Rotorua.

The response has been 'incredible', Kmart NZ country manager Jason Picard said.

'[We are] thrilled to provide these employment opportunities to the Rotorua community.'

He said the new Kmart would open its doors in late March next year - with job applications closing on Friday, December 22.

Picard also said he believed the store would be a success.

'It's a large network gap of our stores with the next closest store over 60km away at Kmart Bethlehem,' he said.

'With a catchment of over 110,000 people, the area has a high proportion of families so we are seeing a strong opportunity to deliver our everyday low priced product offerings.'
