Ute sales outpacing passenger cars

About 50,000 additional cars were registered in the year to June 30, taking the total on our roads to about 2.8 million, according to Statistics New Zealand.

Trucks were the second most popular vehicles, with more than 600,000 registered, up from just under 570,000 a year ago.

But it appears that Kiwis are most fond of pickup trucks. 

According to the Motor Industry Association the number of light commercial vehicles, most often utes, outpaced passenger car sales in the year to June for the first time. 

Pick up trucks accounted for four of the top-selling cars in April.
