ANZ warns of message, text phishing scam

ANZ says customers should never access online banking through a link in a text or email.
ANZ says customers should never access online banking through a link in a text or email.

ANZ says its customers are being targeted with phishing text messages designed to scam them into parting with their personal details.

The texts tell people that a temporary block has been put on their ANZ accounts, or that they have been locked, and the customer needs to follow a link to confirm their identity.

When the link is clicked the customer is sent through to a fake site where they are required to either enter their log-in credentials, account and credit card details or personal information.

An ANZ spokesman said it was not known how many people had received the message.

'Customers should only log into their online banking through visiting anz.co.nz, not through a link in a text message or email. ANZ does not send links to internet banking through text or email.

'If customers get a text message of this kind, they should delete it immediately and not click on the link or provide any information.'

He said anyone who had given their details in these cirucnstances should change their password and call the bank to block and replace their credit card.
