North Canterbury is one step closer to boasting a 50-room hotel and conference facility after consent was granted last month.

Pegasus Golf Ltd last year applied for the resource consent in the township north of Woodend and a hearing was held in November.

The three-storey complex, which will include a restaurant and gym, will be located on three vacant lots on Taerutu Lane and one on Pegasus Boulevard, to the northwest of the golf club's existing buildings.

The Waimakariri District Council received 16 submissions in total, seven of which opposed the development. Three of those submitters against the hotel withdrew their submissions before or during the hearing.

There were other amendments to the original proposal, with access to the site having been of concern to some submitters.

The number of car parking spaces has also increased from the 68 proposed to 101, by including the Pegasus Boulevard section.

Pegasus Golf Club owner Sam Huo said the 'significant investment' would support the growing recognition of Pegasus as a destination, as well as providing employment opportunities.

In her deliberations, Commissioner Justine Ashley acknowledged the benefits the facility would provide to the social and economic wellbeing of the local and wider community.

The golf club and course was bought by Pegasus Golf, owned by Sports and Education Corporation Ltd, in September 2017. Huo said the business was looking at several ways to boost the club, including the proposed hotel complex.

The development plans were presented to the Pegasus Residents' Group (PRGI) committee last year and received positive feedback as it would create jobs and attract visitors.

President Roger Rule said the committee was pleased to hear that Huo wanted to see Pegasus achieve some aspects of the late Bob Robertson's vision for the town, which had included a hotel complex.
