NZ's rarest jar of peanut butter going for over $1000 on Trade Me
Wednesday, 8 September 2021
One of New Zealand’s rarest jars of peanut butter is up for auction – and it could be one of the world’s most expensive nutty spreads.
The Pic’s Peanut Butter jar went up for sale on Trade Me on September 1 to fundraise for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and had reached a price tag of $1,100 on Wednesday with the auction still running for three more days.
What makes the jar a rarity, is the contents – the peanut butter is made from New Zealand-grown peanuts, something Aotearoa isn’t well-known for, with Pic’s Peanut Butter being made from the legumes sourced from Australia, Zambia, Brazil and Nicaragua.
Pic’s Peanut Butter founder Pic Picot said earlier this year a joint venture between Plant and Food Research, Pic’s Peanut Butter, and Northland farmers yielded 20 kilograms of peanuts.

“We managed to get four jars of peanut butter from this first Northland crop.”
He said the other three jars had been allocated special placements, including one being permanently displayed at Nelson’s Pic’s Peanut Butter World, another donated to Nelson Provincial Museum and the final jar ear-marked for a New Zealand hero, who will be nominated by the community via Pic’s Peanut Butter’s social media channels.
Picot said that those bidding on the Trade Me auction had a unique, never-to-be-repeated chance to own a genuine piece of New Zealand food history.
“Our peanut butter makers hand-shelled these nuts during their lunchtime. We roasted them at The Food Factory, and ground them in one of our original grinders. We think this is pretty special, so whatever you pay for it, it will be worth it. It tastes amazing, but don’t open it; leave it for your grandchildren.”
