Talley’s Seafood has confirmed it will close its Westport fish processing factory following the completion of a staff consultation process.

The decision will affect 92 staff and follows a strategic review of the company’s processing network.

In a statement, Talley’s said the move to close the factory reflected productivity and efficiency improvements across its operations. These included ongoing investment in technology and innovation.

As a result, the company can now process its full volume of fish through its two larger facilities located in Motueka and Timaru.

Talley’s Seafood CEO Tony Hazlett said the decision was a “difficult one” and that the Westport team had made a 'significant contribution” over many years.

“This is a difficult decision, but it reflects how our business has evolved and how we need to operate into the future,” he said.

The company confirmed to Stuff that all affected staff will be offered employment opportunities elsewhere, including those in roles that will remain in Westport.

They said they are working closely with employees to support their transition, including opportunities across sites in Motueka, Blenheim, Canterbury, Timaru and Greymouth, as well as at sea on factory vessels.

Additional support will include CV assistance, job search and training opportunities, wellbeing services, and, where possible, assistance with relocation and accommodation.

Operations at Talley’s Seafood’s other fish processing sites are unaffected by the Westport decision.

The last day for processing at the Westport site will be Friday, May 15.

The site will continue to operate for vessel unloads, weigh-in, chiller, and logistics functions after this date.
