Clubcard to go as Foodstuffs launches new scheme. How do you rate supermarket loyalty programmes?

Monday, 18 May 2026

Grocery Action Group chair Sue Chetwin tells Laura Tupou a single new competitor will not be enough to lower food prices, saying government must push for structural change to the supermarket duopoly of Foodstuffs and Woolworths.

New World, Pak’nSave and Four Square are launching a new loyalty scheme called Club+ that will allow their supermarket shoppers to use rewards across the three Foodstuffs’ supermarkets.

The New World Clubcard will be phased out and Club+ launches in stores from June 15.

Brendon Lawry, Acting Chief Customer Officer of Foodstuffs NZ said for over a decade Clubcard has delivered savings and some people will be sad to say goodbye.

Clubcard officially closes at the end of July 26.

“The good news is Club+ is even better with greater flexibility because it can be used across New World, Pak’nSave and Four Square,” Lawry said.

The launch will bring the Foodstuffs North Island and Foodstuffs South Island co-operatives’ brands together on one platform for the first time.

“It’s about making it simpler for customers to access relevant savings and benefits through one card, while also creating a more personalised experience over time,” Lawry said.

Foodstuffs’ brand tracking from May 25 to Apr '26 found more than three quarters of customers regularly shop at more than one supermarket.

Will there still be fuel discount vouchers at Pak’nSave and New World?

Stuff asked Foodstuffs if the fuel discounts will remain for casual shoppers or if Club+ membership will be required.

Customers will continue to receive fuel discounts under the new Club+ programme, a Foodstuffs spokesperson said.

“If a customer doesn’t scan Club+, they’ll continue to receive a printed paper fuel voucher at checkout, except at South Island Pak’nSave stores with their own fuel stations,” they said.

If a customer scans Club+, their fuel discount will be loaded directly to their card or app for use at participating fuel sites.

Club+ has a digital card instantly available in the Club+, New World and Pak’nSave apps.

Here’s how Club+ will work

One Club+ Dollar is equal to $1. Customers earn Club+ Dollars on qualifying purchases at New World at a rate of 0.75% and at Four Square at a rate of 0.38% when they scan their Club+ card.

Club+ Dollars can be spent as full or partial payment on groceries at any of the three supermarkets.

Pak’nSave customers won’t earn Club+ Dollars.

If a customer earns Airpoints, every 5 Club+ Dollars earned will convert to 5 Airpoints and be credited to their nominated Koru account.

Existing Clubcard members will be able to carry across their New World Dollar balances, shopping history and preferences when they join Club+.

Lawry said the Club+ programme is easy to join and registration is now up and running.

He said they encourage customers to join early so shoppers can start scanning and saving from launch day in mid-June.

The Commerce Commission says Foodstuffs and Woolworths maintain a combined 82% market share. Despite sweeping regulatory changes, the finance minister admits results are frustratingly slow for Kiwis facing high grocery prices.

What does Woolworths offer?

With the Everyday Rewards scheme from Woolworths, customers can scan and shop towards unlocking a $15 voucher.

One dollar spent equals one point. The earn rate is O.75% a Woolworths spokesperson said.

Boost offers can be activated by the app on your phone and bonus points are automatically added. Members who redeem Boost offers with Woolworths earn vouchers 5x faster than those who don’t, a spokeperson said.

When a shopper reaches 2000 points the voucher can then be used at Woolworths and a range of partners. Some members who have chosen travel rewards can also have their points converted into travel rewards.
