Five piles were damaged causing the wharf to slump, following the shakes on December 31 and January 2, which recorded magnitudes of 4.5 and 4.2, respectively.

They were both centred near Upper Hutt with the larger of the two reportedly felt as far away as the deep south near Gore, and in Kaiwaka, Northland.

The Hutt City Council said engineers inspected the wharf on January 2 and declared it safe. It remains open to the public.

The damaged piles will be replaced on January 11 as part of scheduled repairs. The wharf will remain open during this work.
