Mike McRoberts' abs star in first DWTS promo

Monday, 8 April 2019

Newshub anchor Mike McRoberts caused a stir on social media on Monday when he appeared shirtless – and waxed and oiled – in the first promotional video for this year's season of Dancing with the Stars.

Within minutes, commentators on Facebook and Twitter were taking to their keyboards to praise the 53-year-old's physique, saying 'who's your Daddy' to the Father of the Nation.

'Wow wee Mike McRoberts hot hot hot,' said one.

'Wow Mike McRoberts body damnnnn,' wrote another.

'Wow Mike McRoberts has a banging body! But who are the other three?' another asked of the video in which McRoberts appears with three of his DWTS rivals – comedian Laura Daniel, Mai FM host K'Lee and olympic skier and TV host Anna Wilcox.

McRoberts responded graciously to the public praise, thanking fans on Twitter and liking their comments on Instagram.

He even fronted a video in which he reads some of the messages that have appeared since the promo dropped, laughing awkwardly at lines such as 'I'm hoping for a shirtless number – that body.'

He was confused, however, by a comment labelling him 'a snack'.

'What does that even mean?' he asked off-camera.

Although viewers are used to seeing McRoberts in a suit and tie on the evening news, this isn't the first time he's displayed his body in public.

Last January, he posted a topless photo to his Instagram, taken after he completed his first ocean swim.

The announcement that McRoberts will compete this year has also led to calls for a guest appearance from his co-anchor, Sam Hayes, who won the last season of DWTS.

She 'has done me no favours,' McRoberts joked of Hayes in an interview with The Rock's morning show The Morning Rumble.

However, the anchor said that he was in it for the fun of participating – 'you don't need to win this to win' – and to raise money for his chosen charity, Variety's Bikes for Kids.
