Litter by little: Muritai School shows how easy it is to pick up a piece of litter a day

Thursday, 20 September 2018

Let's follow the plea of Luca Marshall, 9, 'If everyone picked up one piece of litter a day it won't make a small difference, it will make a big difference.'

A seaside school in Eastbourne, Lower Hutt, is getting behind The Dominion Post's Litter by Little project aimed at picking up a piece of litter a day, every day.

Muritai School sits close to the eastern side of Wellington Harbour, and many of its students are conscious of how the litter makes its way into our waterways.

We'd love to see your photos of you, you school, or organisation picking up litter. Send pictures and video to wellington@stuff.co.nz

Luca Marshall, 9, says everyone doing their part is a huge help for the environment.

'If you don't litter, then that's the best way to stop litter going into the ocean.

'If everyone picked up one piece of litter a day it wouldn't make a small difference, it would make a big difference.'

James Allcock, 9, said every piece of litter that didn't make it into the water, especially, would not only help the waterway, but also the wildlife in it.

'The worst type of plastic that gets in the ocean is soft plastic, your plastic bags you use. They can survive in the ocean for 1000 years.

'When litter gets in the ocean it can kill heaps of sea animals, like turtles. They could choke on it because they think it's something else that they might eat.'
