Jellyfish up to a metre in diameter seen at beach on Auckland's North Shore

A giant jellyfish has washed up on the shores of an Auckland beach. 

The creature, about a metre in diameter, was spotted by residents walking on the beach at Devonport, near the wharf.

Sue O'Callaghan said: 'It was so huge, I've not seen one that big before'. 

Around this time last year there was an influx of jellyfish washed up on east coast beaches including a large one in Orewa.

Users of Facebook group Devonport Locals, reported multiple sightings at beaches in the area.

Thought to be a lion's mane jellyfish, they are not poisonous but can sting causing minor welts.

At the time NIWA marine ecologist Mike Page told Stuff they weren't a health risk but 'small children should certainly stay away'.

Common to the Pacific Ocean, the jellyfish are moved by currents and wind.
