Have your say: Which city in New Zealand has the best food scene?
Tuesday, 16 June 2026
New Zealand’s dining scene is about to have a major international moment.
The country’s first Michelin selections will soon be revealed, putting fresh attention on restaurants, chefs and dining destinations across Aotearoa.
But before Michelin gives its verdict, we want yours.
Which New Zealand city has the best food scene?
For some people, the answer is Auckland, with its scale, diversity and endless choice.
The country’s biggest city can offer fine dining, food courts, waterfront restaurants, suburban favourites, night markets, Pacific flavours, Asian eateries, bakeries, bars and neighbourhood spots that locals fiercely defend.
Others will point to Wellington, a city that has long made food part of its identity.
The capital has a reputation for coffee, craft beer, wine bars, compact restaurants and cosy places where a good meal is never far away.
Christchurch has been building momentum too. In recent years, Ōtautahi’s food scene has grown with new restaurants, laneway bars, modern bistros, brunch spots, global flavours and relaxed neighbourhood favourites helping change the way people see the city.
Queenstown brings a different kind of appeal. With its wineries, destination restaurants, lakeside views and steady stream of visitors, the resort town has become one of the country’s most talked-about places for a special meal.
Dunedin also has plenty of loyal defenders. Its food scene has its own southern character, from cheese rolls and student-town classics to seafood, bakeries, distillers, cafés and local restaurants making the most of regional produce.
And the answer might not be one of the obvious names. Napier, Nelson, Tauranga, Hamilton, Rotorua, New Plymouth and smaller towns around the country all have food spots that many locals could believe deserve more attention.
There are many ways to judge a city’s food scene. It might be the best fine dining, the strongest coffee culture, the most reliable cheap eats, the best bakeries, the freshest seafood, the liveliest markets, or simply the place where you’ve had your most memorable meal.
Michelin will soon have its say, but New Zealand diners know what they like.
