There may have been shock, tears and disappointment at the auction of the four Orewa townhouses on the very last Block NZ show in 2022, but that was no reflection on the quality of the builds - it was simply the state of the post-Covid market.

But the flat result following The Block NZ: Redemption did mean the series that was to have been filmed in Beach Rd, Browns Bay the following year was cancelled. And so far, we haven’t heard of any further “redemption”.

There was shock and dismay during the The Block NZ: Redemption auction as two teams failed to sell their homes, but Chloe and Ben scraped over the line to win the $100,000 prize.

Today, however, the winning three-bedroom house, which was completed by Chloe Hes and Ben Speedy, is back on the market and is for sale by negotiation. The property fetched $1.145 million at the Block auction, which was $4000 above the reserve. Today it has a CV of $1.025 million.

Chloe and Ben pocketed $100,000 for their win, plus the $4000 over reserve. They, along with the other contestants, had been on earlier shows and were given a second chance to win.

The newly listed house, at 13 Ringi Lane, Orewa, Auckland, also won the “Best House” prize during the show, having won a massive eight “room reveals”. Block judges Jason Bonham and Shelley Ferguson raved about the bathrooms, the main bedroom and the upstairs seating area in particular.

Listing agent Karin Blaauw, of Harcourts Silverdale, says the buyers have lived in the house for several years, but more recently have been letting it out as an Airbnb property. They have plans for other projects.

Special features of the townhouse include a design that enables lock-up-and-leave functionality. Luxurious touches feature throughout, with soft curves and refined features that caught the eye of the Block judges.

The open-plan living space on the ground floor opens out to a sunny landscaped yard, with a deck, outdoor entertaining and barbecue area. And there’s also a pretty outlook at the front - the house is opposite a reserve, and there are views of the sea from the upper level.

Stacy and Adam Middleton bought the house they worked on after the show, and have since adopted a blind dog Toddy (front), to befriend their Samoyed, Boki. They are now expecting their first child in November.

In addition to the three bedrooms upstairs, there is an enclosed reading room or study, a dressing area and luxurious ensuite for the main bedroom. There is also a family bathroom, and a powder room on the lower level for guests.

The current owners added a mezzanine bed to the reading room to provide extra accommodation (a fourth bedroom) for guests. The original study was one of the eight winning rooms on the show.

In reviewing the houses before the original auction Stuff noted that Chloe and Ben “won” the storage wars. “In addition to the storage downstairs, they have bench seating in a child’s room and in their mezzanine area, with storage beneath, and they also have storage in the attic with pull-down stairs, and they have large, well-organised wardrobes.”

The producers said each team spent $250,000 on the fit-out, including bathrooms, kitchens and solar panels, and a minimum of $130,000 on furnishings, including furniture, curtains, soft furnishings and decor. (The houses were originally sold with all furnishings included.)

As with the others, this house has an EV charger, heat pumps on the ground floor and a ducted heat pump system upstairs.

Neighbours from the show

Two of the four houses on The Block show failed to sell under the hammer in 2022. One of those was eventually bought by the couple who worked on the property on the show - Stacy and Adam Middleton.

The pair have remained in their house and are currently redecorating a bedroom for their first baby - a boy expected in November. You can follow their progress on Instagram.

When interviewed in 2023 they told Stuff they love the local community, and had got to know their neighbours. “We are very happy here, and it’s great to have other people moving in around us, and it’s fun to see the homes take on a new life,” Stacy said. “When we first moved in, we were the only ones here and there weren’t even any street lights.”
