Germany's banned dog adoptions during Christmas, but not New Zealand

SPCA research shows people don't walk their dogs as much as they think.

The warmer months are the best time of year to adopt pets, says the SPCA.

That's one reason why it will not follow Germany's lead and ban animal adoptions over the festive season.

SPCA New Zealand CEO Andrea Midgen said the SPCA was strict about allowing people to give pets as gifts for Christmas, but it wouldn't impose a ban over the holiday period.

SPCA executive officer Andrea Midgen says summertime is a great time to adopt a pet.

In fact, summer was a great time to adopt animals, she said.

Most city, regional and district councils say they have a rigorous adoption process in place.

'Adopting over the summer holidays can be a good option. If you're not travelling and will be home to help get to know your new furry family member and build up your bond with them, this could help them settle in faster.'

Animal rescue shelters in Germany put a stop to dog adoption in the run-up to Christmas because dogs were 'not suitable as surprise gifts'.

According to BBC, Berlin's shelter – the largest in Europe – hopes the ban reduces unwanted animals from being dumped back after the holidays.

Dog adoption won't resume again until in the new year.

It was the first time the shelters had taken such a drastic approach to dog adoption.

'Animals are living beings with needs and feelings,' the Berlin shelter told BBC.
