NZTA consults on raising Auckland motorway speed back to 100kmh

Should the northwestern motorway have a maximum 100kmh? NZ Transport Agency wants to know what you think.

Auckland's northwestern motorway could soon have a maximum speed of 100kmh most of the way into the city.

And now the NZ Transport Agency was asking for the public's feedback on the proposal.

The motorway was reduced to a maximum of 80kmh from Rosebank Rd to the central city ahead of the opening of the Waterview Tunnel mid-last year.

All the motorway around and leading up to the tunnel had variable signs to allow traffic speed to be further reduced as slow as 30kmh if needed.

The flyovers and the tunnel would remain an 80kmh maximum.

The move incensed a large group of motorists who campaigned to have the speed returned to the 100kmh limit it was before roadworks for the State Highway 16 motorway upgrade.

After the public outcry at the reduction to 80kmh, the transport agency did a u-turn and announced it would review the top speed.

NZTA has now proposed that only inside the tunnel, its southern approaches and its northern flyovers would have an 80kmh maximum speed, with a minimum 30kmh.

This means that some of the southwestern motorway would also change from its current maximum of 80kmh to 100kmh.

The transport agency was advertising for public feedback.

People have until March 28, 5pm, to submit on the proposal.

It was not known when a variable speed limit would take effect.

A summary of the feedback was due to be published at the end of March, according to NZTA.
