Greg Murphy on road safety: driver distraction

May 6-12 marks Road Safety Week in New Zealand - timely but also a reminder of the tragic run of serious accidents we've experienced this year, particularly in April.

For each day of Road Safety Week, Stuff Motoring is bringing you tips from motorsport legend and road safety campaigner Greg Murphy, in association with the Holden Street Smart young driver-training programme.

We all know that we should be 100 per cent focused on driving our cars, but we also let ourselves succumb to distraction, says Murphy.

'We're very much willing to be distracted - mostly by our mobile phones these days.

'But driving is a task that needs 100 per cent of our concentration, 100 per cent of the time.

'Things can happen so very quickly and it can only take one small look down at your device or whatever else… that might be the most critical moment of your life.'
