A four-door Mustang could be the sedan Ford needs right now

Monday, 6 April 2020

With the Mondeo likely leaving our roads this year, Ford could be without a four-door non-SUV option for the first time in decades. With that in mind, let's see what a four-door Mustang could look like.

A Mustang sedan (or gran coupe, to be specific) has been floating around the rumour mill for a fair few years now. As recently as 2018, Ford dealers were apparently offered hints the Blue Oval was working on a Mustang-based Kia Stinger rival.

We haven't heard much since then but, of course, that doesn't mean Ford isn't building it.

Do we need a four-door Mustang to fight the Kia Stinger? Why not?

These renders, created by SRK Designs show how good a four-door Mustang could look. It's based on a Mustang GT, which means some version of Ford's 5.0-litre Coyote V8 will be under the bonnet.

Doesn't look half bad, we reckon. But what should it be named...

* SUVs have killed the Mondeo in Oz

* Mountune pushes Focus ST close to Supra power

* No turbos for us thanks: here are five old-school V8s

* Would you pay $48,000 for a bog-standard 1979 Ford Falcon?**

Back in '18, some folk reckoned power could come from a turbocharged V8 using technology from smaller EcoBoost motors. The same powerplant could make its way into the next-generation Mustang coupe as well, powering a high-performance variant.

Those rumours would fit in to Ford wanting to build a souped-up V8 to compete with what Chevy is allegedly doing with its Corvette. The mid-engined C8 'Vette is going to get more high performance variants and one of those could come with a variant of Cadillac's twin-turbo 4.2-litre Blackwing V8.

As for the name of the hypothetical family-friendly Mustang, Ford would probably shy away from bringing Falcon back, given how much flak Holden took for continuing the Commodore name on the front/all-wheel drive inline-four/V6 powered Opel Insignia.

Unfortunately for fans of go-fast sedans, Ford is focusing most of its attention on upcoming electric models and its existing line-up, not to mention the mass culling of passenger cars coming out of Ford America. Chances of a production four-door Mustang are pretty slim… but never say never.
