BMW 4 Series 2020 Final Set Up

BMW has confirmed its new generation of 4 Series will be revealed next Wednesday, June 3.

There won't be much fanfare, with COVID-19 forcing BMW to pull the covers off online. The official time of the livestream is June 2 at 6pm, Central European Summer Time. That translates to 4am on the following Wednesday in New Zealand, for those early risers.

Plenty of leaks and teasers have pretty much ensured we know most of what there is to know about the new 4, not the least of which being the larger kidney grille.

That nose doesn't actually look as bad as we thought it might.

This will be our first chance to properly see the 'bucktoothed' grille, along with more aggressive headlights. The 3 Series doesn't get the larger grille but the range-topping M3 sedan apparently will.

Mention which, the M3 and M4 siblings will arrive later this year, around September. According to the head of BMW's M division, Markus Flasch, the company is in the final stages of tuning the M3 at the Nurburgring. He also reiterated the high-performance sedan will come with both a six-speed manual and eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Power from the new twin-turbo straight-six is expected to reach up to around 375kW, the same as in the X3 M and X4 M Competition models, with torque likely coming in around 600Nm.

The head honcho of the family will be the all-electric i4, as a recent report from Autocar UK pointed to the model packing 391kW and a monstrous 813Nm from a dual-motor electric powertrain.

Other members of the 4 Series include the M440i xDrive, which will get the same turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six as the M340i with the addition of a 48 volt mild hybrid system.

The new electricals consist of an 8kW starter/generator and a small lithium-ion battery to both improve efficiency and off-the-line go. Total power is an identical 275kW while torque should be improved over the M340i's 500Nm.

Moving down the petrol hierarchy introduces the 430i while diesel offerings could include the 420d, 430d and M440d.
