Mercedes-Benz announces fresh E-Classes

Saturday, 30 May 2020

Mercedes-Benz has detailed its latest and greatest E-Class offerings, coming in coupe and cabriolet variants as well as some go-fast AMGs.

The coupe is, well, a coupe variant of the sedan released a few months back, sans a couple of doors, and the cabrio is as you might expect, a droptop coupe.

If you opt for the cabrio, don't worry about being caught out in the chilly months. The Aircap wind deflector and Airscarf neck warmer are there to keep you nice and toasty while the soft top is down.

Merc's 3.0-litre straight-six is on offer too, making 270kW/500Nm in the E 450 and a healthy 320kW/520Nm in the AMG E 53. Lower-spec models will come with a four-cylinder mild hybrid diesel rated at 195kW/400Nm or a 2.9-litre straight-six diesel offering 197kW/700Nm. Any E-Class equipped with EQ Boost tech can increase its torque by 250Nm for short periods of time.

Sprinting to 100kmh in the standard E-Class coupe models ranges from 7.4 seconds (220 d), 7.6s (220 d 4Matic and 200), 7.7s (200 4Matic), 6.4s (300) and 5.0s (450 4Matic). Stepping up to the AMG models trims the time to 4.4s. As a general rule, add around 0.2 seconds for cabriolet variants.

Speaking of the new 53 family member, the AMG sets itself apart from other E-Class cars with a vertical-slat grille, small lip spoiler, quad exhaust outlets and special 19-inch wheels, with 20 inchers available too.

All E-Class models get a new steering wheel too, which incorporate more touch controls for the instrument cluster and MBUX infotainment system.

Official pricing is yet to be announced, but we'd imagine they won't be entirely cheap. Hopefully we'll learn more before the year is out.
