Toyota is searching for New Zealand's most iconic Hilux

Toyota New Zealand has already begun following up some promising leads in the hunt for Barry Crump’s bush-bashing and river-running Hiluxes.

Last week Toyota New Zealand appealed for information about two of its most iconic vehicles from almost 40 years ago.

The company is searching for the red 1982 Hilux used in the original Hilux television commercial starring the unflappable bushman-poet Barry Crump and his sidekick, city slicker Lloyd “Scotty” Scott.

Toyota also wants to find the yellow 1983 Hilux that also featured the comedic duo in a follow-up commercial.

“We have had an amazing response from customers and fans, and it’s great to see that the legacy of these iconic ads and Hilux continues,’’ said Toyota New Zealand’s general manager of marketing, Andrew Davis.

“We are following up on some leads around the yellow truck, and we think we may have tracked it down, but we are still searching for the red 1982 Crumpy Hilux, so if anyone knows where it is, please contact us.’’

“We may have parted company with them a few decades ago, but we feel we still have an unbreakable bond with them,” he says.

A new marketing campaign is about to be filmed to launch the new 2021 Hilux and Toyota is looking to include one or both iconic Hilux vehicles.

The Crumpy and Scotty Hilux commercials were ground-breaking in their day and won many advertising awards. The campaign was so loved and successful, the pairing of the two characters with Hilux continued for 12 years.

Recently, the Crumpy and Scotty commercials featured in NZ On Screen’s Top 10 TV Ads from 1960 – 2020. Younger viewers who never saw the ads live on telly, can see them above or by clicking here.
