Peugeot 508 GT: Top Family Car and Top Wagon

Peugeot importer Auto Distributors NZ says it is working to make sure Kiwi enthusiasts won’t miss out on the most powerful Peugeot production car ever built.

Confirmation of the new PSE (Peugeot Sport Engineered) version of the Peugeot 508 reaching New Zealand is likely to come early next year.

The announcement of PSE models as a new performance flagship for the Peugeot brand coincides with the announcement at the recent Le Mans 24 Hours that Peugeot Sport is returning to the top class of the FIA World Endurance Championship with a new LMH (Le Mans Hypercar) hybrid contender in 2022.

Peugeot will produce the 508 PSE in both liftback and wagon body styles. Here’s hoping it does make it to our shores.

The 508 PSE has a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining the 1.6-litre THP turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors that enable all-wheel-drive. The system is a further development of the plug-in powertrain that will be introduced on the 3008 GT Hybrid4 next year.

The petrol engine develops 147kW and 300Nm of torque and the combined system output peaks with 265kW and 520Nm. There is an eight-speed automatic transmission and Peugeot Sport claims a 0-100km/h acceleration figure of 5.2secs.

An 11.5kWh lithium-ion battery stores the electrical energy and allows a zero emissions EV driving range of 42km according to WLTP test protocols. Combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at 2.03L/100km. The 508 PSE has Electric, Comfort, Hybrid, Sport and 4WD driving modes.

In addition to the plug-in power and all-wheel-drive capability the PSE versions of the 508 have specific grille and bumper treatments, widened front and rear track dimensions, 380mm front brake rotors with four-point callipers and lowered suspension with three-mode damping.

The 20-inch alloy wheels are shod with 245/35 ZR20 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

The cabin features sports seats in a combination leather, 3D mesh and alcantara trim with Kryptonite vivid green detailing. Peugeot says the installation of electric motors and the battery pack hasn’t compromised either interior room or load space.

Three exterior colours - Selenium grey, Perla Nera black and Pearl white, each with Kryptonite green details – will be available.

The Peugeot 508 PSE is being produced in Fastback and SW (estate) body styles and Peugeot has signalled the high performance 508 duo will be followed by further PSE models.
