Australian driver discovers the quickest way to get arrested

Wednesday, 5 May 2021

The driver of a Hyundai Excel was arrested in Australia after he ran a red light in the Adelaide suburb of Glenelg which might, at first glance, seem excessive for driving a Hyundai Excel, or even running a red light. But wait, as they say, there’s more.

The South Australia Police say that the man ran the red light in front of a patrol car at 1am as police were patrolling the area after occupants yelled at the police. But still, arrest is a bit of an overreaction, right?

There’s still more, however.

After police pulled the car over, they found that the driver’s licence had expired six years ago, and he was currently on bail, under orders not to drive.

Then it gets even better – police say that “closer inspection” of the man’s car revealed it was a sedan that the owner had cut the roof off “to make it into a convertible” and that it also had extensive crash damage to the rear.

According to post on the South Australia Police Facebook page, “The driver, a 25-year-old man from Elizabeth Downs, was arrested and charged with drive unlicensed, fail to stop at a red light, breach of bail and breach vehicle standards.”

The car was defected (which we assume is police-speak for “issued a defect notice”) and towed from the scene.

All of which seems like a lot of effort to get arrested very quickly.
