Lexus reveals all-new LX full-size SUV

Thursday, 14 October 2021

The Lexus LX has been given a thorough update, with new looks, a new engine, and a new platform.

Lexus has revealed the all-new LX, due here in early 2022.

The full-size SUV has been given some significant changes, including riding on a new platform and a new twin-turbo diesel V6 engine.

Weight has been reduced by 200kg compared to the outgoing model, thanks largely to a move to the same platform as the new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 that it shares all of its underpinnings with. The new architecture also improves rigidity, while the diet has resulted in better responsiveness and less fuel consumption.

Mention fuel, Lexus says the new LX offers an 11 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the old model. This is down to the new 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6 engine, which makes 227kW/700Nm. It’s the same engine as seen in the Toyota Land Cruiser, with which the LX shares its mechanicals.

Like the Land Cruiser, the LX gets a ten-speed automatic transmission, electronically controlled brakes and a new electric power steering system. Expect a similar 700mm wading depth, 235mm of ground clearance and approach and departure angles of 32 degrees and 25 degrees as well.

Inside is a new dual touchscreen set-up, with the upper 12.3-inch screen showing navigation and audio and the lower seven-inch screen providing quick access to climate controls while also working as a display for the Multi-Terrain Select system when going off-road.

Lexus is also offering 22-inch wheels for the first time ever, while the new F-Sport trim level will get a Torsen limited-slip differential as well as bespoke tuning from the front and rear dampers, a rear stabiliser and different settings for the variable suspension and steering.

With all the new technical and mechanical goodies comes a fresh look, with the LX sporting a huge spindle grille up front filled with seven horizontal bars that are hollowed to improve cooling as well as slimmer headlights with 3D daytime running lights. Around the back are redesigned taillights and ‘LEXUS’ written out in place of a badge.

“As the flagship SUV of the Lexus brand the new LX is a significant model in our range,” says Andrew Davis, Lexus New Zealand General Manager.

“The new LX has a striking new exterior design, a new vehicle platform and has a full update of driver and vehicle technology. The new platform also enables us to launch an all-new powertrain for LX as we continue to focus on the right powertrains for all customer needs.”

Local specifications and price will be confirmed closer to the Q1 2022 arrival of the new LX. Assuming, of course, there aren’t any more Covid-related delays.
