Volkswagen is ramping up the teasers of its new Amarok.

Volkswagen has shown off the next new bit of its upcoming Amarok upgrade, a massive new central touchscreen.

The unit is the same as the one found in the new Ford Ranger, and will run the same Sync4 operating system with a custom skin for the Amarok.

That means it’ll be responsible for controlling things like media, air-conditioning and navigation, as the only physical buttons below the screen are for parking assistance, jumping to the climate screen, vehicle safety screen and switching drive modes. There’s also a physical volume knob and a hazard light switch.

Assuming the screen is lifted wholesale from the Ranger, it will also be home to the various off-roading controls, like toggling the rear differential on and off.

Volkswagen will offer the screen with a diameter of either 10 or 12 inches, like the Ranger, depending on the specification level.

Other changes compared to the old model include a 175mm increase to the wheelbase (3270mm total), and a 5350mm long overall body, up by 100mm. That means the front and rear overhangs should be a bit shorter this time around, improving off-road abilities. VW confirmed the approach angle is better, at least, as well as the fording depth, expected to match the Ranger’s 800mm.

Volkswagen also claims a rather chunky 1200kg payload capacity, but doesn’t specify which variant this will apply to, along with a roof-loading capacity of 350kg.

Under the bonnet will be a range of powertrains, including a V6 and a slew of turbo-fours. VW hasn’t yet confirmed anything beyond “one petrol and up to four different diesels with four to six cylinders and cubic capacity of 2.0 to 3.0 litres – optionally with rear-wheel drive, or on-demand or permanent all-wheel drive”.

Volkswagen is set to reveal the Amarok in full in July.
